How do American kids “measure up?”

Every three years, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) measures reading ability, math and science literacy, and other key skills. Out of 71 countries tested in 2015, PISA found that U.S. students placed

  • 38th in math
  • 24th in reading
  • 24th in science

In 2015, the U.S. spent an average of $12,800 per student on elementary and secondary education–only 3 of those 71 countries spent more.

Anxious for highly-educated, quality employees, many American employers are forcing American workers to train their foreign replacements who are willing to work for less, especially in tech roles.

What has caused this deteriorating situation for American graduates?

What is Progressive Education?

In a word, “progressive” education is dominated by: FADS.

“Each new innovation is jumped on eagerly by hoards of school leaders and education consultants keen to try on the emperor’s new clothes. Yet one of the most powerful influences on learning is so simple and unfashionable that it is often overlooked: a teacher’s capacity to explain things clearly.”
James Tucker

In 1938, “progressive” education philosopher John Dewey introduced a theory he called “experiential education.” Some “fads” eventually developed include:

  • Whole language
  • Common Core
  • On-line learning
  • iPads in the classroom
  • “Wrap-around” services
  • Team teaching
  • Detailed lesson plans
  • Constant testing
  • Schools without walls

Each fad promises to revolutionize learning but often ends in dismal failure, causing school boards and administrators to insist on smaller class sizes, more non-teaching staff, and bigger budgets.

Enter Marxism

Dewey was a signatory of “A Humanist Manifesto” written in 1933 which 14-point value system

  • Denied supernatural revelation
  • Opposed an “acquisitive and profit-motivated society”
  • Outlined an egalitarian world

Again, in a word: Marxism.

Friends of Liberty Education Committee
Friends of Liberty United Education Committee-the Solution is Liberty

Having a high view of mankind as bearing the image of God, early public schools were formed to strengthen society by developing imperfect (sinners) but competent individual citizens who would cooperatively compete in a free enterprise system guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, and guided by a personal relationship with God.

Progressives, having a low view of mankind as mere material in an evolutionary process, see their role as using the force of government to mold subjects to perfection in a collectivist Utopia.

Forever failing in their Social Engineering, Marxist Progressives need to find someone to blame. Currently, Critical Race Theory pits White “oppressors” against Minority “victims” in a “systemically racist” society, a position formally adopted in July, 2020, by the Ohio State Board of Education.

Liberty Provides the Solution

Friends of Liberty United calls for a return to the vision of education shared by our forebears: to restore the preeminent right of parents to make choices regarding the education of their children; to make sure that school authorities respect parental values; and to ensure that parental choice is affordable. The school is to train the student how to learn, think, and express himself, not what to think. Freedom of Conscience is to be respected.
